Position Description
CLIENT
The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (“AAO-HNS”) is one of the world's largest organizations representing specialists who treat the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. With a long and rich history of supporting the profession, the Academy represents approximately 12,000 otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons who diagnose and treat disorders of those areas. For over 125 years, the Academy’s members have proven time and again that their commitment to patients, to medicine, and to their specialty is unwavering. The medical disorders treated by their physicians are among the most common affecting patients of all ages in the United States and around the world. They include chronic ear disease, hearing and balance disorders, hearing loss, sinusitis, snoring and sleep apnea, allergies, swallowing disorders, nosebleeds, hoarseness, dizziness, and tumors of the head and neck as well as aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and intricate micro-surgical procedures of the head and neck. The AAO-HNS Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Academy, works to advance the art, science, and ethical practice of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery through education, research, and lifelong learning. The Academy also plays a critical role in legislative and regulatory advocacy programs aimed at advancing patient care and protecting the interests of the membership.
SUMMARY
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer (“EVP/CEO”) plays a critical role in effectively leading and managing the Academy’s dedicated team of employees in support of the organization’s goals and objectives as defined by the strategic plan. In addition, the EVP/CEO is responsible for supporting the Board in setting the Academy’s strategic direction by providing advice and guidance relative to the advancement of the Academy’s vision and mission.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Guided and supported by the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Academy and Foundation and the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Academy and Foundation, the responsibilities of the EVP/CEO include, but are not limited to, the following:
Strategy
- Provides innovative vision and forward-thinking leadership in the development and execution of organizational strategy.
- In conjunction with the Board of Directors, articulates and executes a clear future path for AAO-HNS/F. Recommends and implements strategic plans that will achieve established goals and objectives.
- Identifies new opportunities and/or challenges facing the Academy and recommends action to the Board of Directors as appropriate.
Governance
- Engages and works in collaboration with the Board of Directors on matters of governance, mission, vision and strategy.
- Supports the President, other officers, committees, and volunteers in the execution of their assigned responsibilities.
- Actively assists the Board of Directors in identifying key emerging issues and implementing future direction as established by the Board.
- Maintains awareness of governance, legal and financial reporting requirements for the Academy and provides guidance to the Board.
- Ensures the organization’s fiscal health, legal integrity, and compliance with applicable laws.
- Develops, implements, and is accountable to the Board for the Academy’s annual budget and operating plan.
- Conducts periodic compliance review to include bylaws, policies and procedures to ensure execution of best standards of practice for non-profit professional societies.
Leadership
- Continue to lead the specialty of otolaryngology and other otolaryngology subspecialties to ensure specialty unity, including organizing the Specialty Unity Summit.
- Communicates a clear, consistent vision and motivates others to support the goals and objectives of the Academy.
- Attracts, hires, leads and develops a diverse staff to carry out the Academy’s mission, inspiring and empowering them in their roles.
- Creates a positive work environment with opportunities for professional growth, advancement and career development within the Academy.
- Cultivates collaboration and fosters a culture of integrity, teamwork, transparency and results. Promotes and leverages diversity in support of the Academy achieving its potential and drive toward cultural competence.
- Build and grow fundraising opportunities and philanthropic support to advance the mission of the Academy and the endowment.
- Embraces and leads change management to facilitate continuous process improvement of all facets of the Academy.
Management
- Maintains alignment between the Academy’s organizational structure (along with its administrative policies and procedures) and its ability to effectively and efficiently operate in support of the organization’s strategy, goals and objectives.
- Directs the operational activities of the Academy ensuring that the organization is capably staffed and effectively organized to meet or exceed established goals.
- Implements and oversees comprehensive human capital policies, processes and programs that drive a strong linkage between the Academy’s employees and its organizational goals and objectives.
- Drives the annual budgeting process and manages the Academy’s fiduciary responsibilities and oversee its financial performance accordingly.
- Champions diversity and holds staff leaders accountable to maintain a diverse and inclusive environment.
Programs
- Spearheads and drives the Academy’s multi-faceted advocacy programs to be a powerful voice in influencing legislative, political, regulatory, and third-party payer policies at the federal, state and local levels. Seeks ways to increase member awareness of, and involvement in, these critical advocacy activities.
- Effectively manages relationships with external organizations in pursuit of the Academy’s advocacy priorities. Organizations include, among others: the American Medical Association/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel, and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC).
- Develops, enhances, and leads highly effective programs focused on the development of, and service to, the Academy’s membership.
- Oversees the development, advancement and delivery of all of the educational programs of the Foundation and the Academy, ensuring their focus is on content and research necessary to support the goals and objectives of the organizations.
- With the collaboration and input of relevant stakeholders, oversees the planning, organization and conduct of the annual meeting of the Academy’s membership, including programs, exhibits, and other elements consistent with the objectives of the Academy, including pursuit of industry relationships and sponsorship opportunities.
- Oversees, maintains and advances publication programs for both the Academy and the Foundation, ensuring they are responsive to the needs of the Academy’s membership and the charitable and educational goals of the Foundation.
- Manages and further develops our specialty-specific registry and clinical practice guidelines to ensure that Academy membership can obtain needed data to comply with government reporting programs, value-based healthcare, evidence-based medicine, and to foster associated research and innovation.
External
- In conjunction and coordination with the officers of the Academy and the Foundation, serves as spokesperson for the Academy, representing AAO-HNS to key stakeholders to build the Academy’s public image and that of its membership.
- Builds and maintain relationships with American College of Surgeons, American Board of Otolaryngology, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Society of University Otolaryngologists, American Association of Departments of Otolaryngology, the CEO network, S2C2 (informal medical specialty network), ASCENT and any other specialty societies that are relevant to the Academy’s mission.
- Remains up-to-date on events/decisions/rulings that may impact the profession and proactively prepares the Academy and its members to address anticipated opportunities, issues or challenges.
QUALIFICATIONS
Fully-qualified candidates will be otolaryngologists with the highest integrity and a strong reputation among AAO-HNS members, and a true passion for the specialty and the organization. Specific qualifications include:
- Ability to think strategically and articulate AAO-HNS’s vision, mission, and goals in a way that motivates and inspires diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated aptitude for a complex leadership role with the ability to provide effective functional leadership and oversight to all aspects of the Academy’s operations, including annual budgeting, technology, strategic planning, fund-raising, government relations, marketing, communications, membership, meetings management, project management, research, education, etc.
- Has the force of character, humility, insight, talent and cultural competence to lead a large multi-faceted organization.
- Demonstrated track record of championing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Belonging.
- Quantitative aptitude and competence in the financial management responsibilities of the EVP/CEO role.
- Understanding of health care financing and delivery systems and the issues involved in health care reform.
- Ability to recruit, lead, empower and develop a high performing team with clear accountability.
- Collaborative approach to engaging with others in decision-making and consensus building, including the ability to work collaboratively with the board and executive leadership team (ELT). A high degree of emotional intelligence marked by strong self-awareness, empathy and the ability to relate to others.
- Demonstrated personal credibility and professionalism, reflecting AAO-HNS’s values and culture.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Competence in perceiving organizational and political sensitivities and responding accordingly; diplomacy skills; ability to convene diverse stakeholders and productively engage them in collective efforts to advance initiatives in support of the Academy’s goals. Embraces diversity of thought.
- Demonstrated track record of success in achieving continuous improvement and innovation.
- Willingness to travel as required with weekend commitments.
YEAR ONE CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
The specifics regarding measures of success, including metrics, will ultimately be agreed upon by the new CEO and the AAO-HNS Board, but at the end of the CEO’s first year, the Board would expect the following goals to have been achieved:
- Lead a smooth transition and garner trust and respect among the Board, membership, staff and key external constituencies.
- Update the Strategic Plan in order to maintain the Academy’s momentum through a growing and diversified resource base and sound fiscal management.
- Meet membership growth and retention goals, including international and private practice member growth.
- Nurture and grow new revenue-generating programs (e.g. Reg-entSM, private practice spring meeting, otolaryngology core curriculum).
- Retain a talented staff and/or recruit strong replacements for retiring executive leadership team members.
- Address issues, challenges and opportunities pertaining to the Academy’s working culture identified in the culture study conducted by Moran Consulting.
